Laterras R. Whitfield had just arrived in Houston from his flight from Dallas when we met up with him at The Hilton University of Houston, a few miles from downtown. He is casually dressed in an Adidas 3-Stripes tracksuit and sneakers, his white T-shirt and gold chain visible through his partially zipped jacket. Laterras extends a handshake, and we exchange hellos before asking an obvious question. Where is Ashley? Ashley Whitfield (née Woods). His newlywed bride. The couple married in a beautiful ceremony at the California Worship Center in San Fernando last November, which was also live-streamed to invite the ‘Dear Future Wifey’ podcast viewers to watch.
“She’s eating breakfast,” says the 3x Emmy-nominated producer (Laterras introduced us to Ashley after the interview). He jokes that his wife, of almost two months, says it’s a different world when it comes to traveling for interviews and appearances for her husband’s often viral podcast and now his new book, Student of Love. ‘This is your world, I’m just in it. Take me through it gradually,’ he says of his wife, who, before the wedding, was only known as the mystery bride, which suited Ashley just fine because, as Laterras shares, his wife “doesn’t like the spotlight.” He continues, “Ashley is a private person who had only 2500 followers on Instagram when we met… and ‘post and ghost’ is what Laterras called her interaction on social media before, but in a matter of weeks after the couple wed, Ashley’s followers grew to 22K, and her DMs blew up with women asking for advice for their own relationship goals.
Their Love Story…
“We met on Nov. 26, 2023, at approximately 1:32 pm…” Laterras jokes about the time. “I did a live podcast at Pastor Warryn S. Campbell II and his wife Erica Campbell (of the contemporary gospel duo “Mary Mary”) church, and afterward, I was standing in the sanctuary where people were greeting me and expressing how much they enjoyed it,” says Laterras. “Ashley walked up to me, and she said, ‘I really enjoyed your podcast. A couple of my friends have been on your podcast.’ Before I knew it, I grabbed her hand and walked out of the sanctuary into the lobby, and I caught myself, and said, I just grabbed this woman’s hand, and I was like, Man…this is interesting.”

Laterras says Ashley invited him out to dinner that night with herself and a friend, but the two-time Telly Award-winning host had a podcast recording that evening and instead asked that Ashley DM him to keep in touch. He admits he had a strong interest and desire to know more about her, so when they were able to spend time together at a coffee shop by LAX the next day before his flight back home to Dallas, Laterras knew there was “something about this woman,” And in the first five days getting to know each other, Laterras already believed this was going from friend to fiancée— though they remained in the friend zone for sometime. Their first date was March 18, 2025, and Laterras promised a ring by September 1 of the same year, professing he was “committed even before the commitment.”
The Ring and The Ashley Vows…
Custom-made by Philadelphia Diamond Company, Laterras shares the rings’ inscription with the initials TDDUP. “What do you think that stands for?” Laterras quizzes. Till Death Do Us Part is the response on our end. And then there is the “Ciara prayer,” and now the “Ashley vows.” We humored the podcast host, but seriously, those vows were a spiritual and poetic expression of love between the newlyweds that really resonated with Laterras’ global audience and were a main reason why it became the internet-breaking wedding it is.

Student of Love…
The new book that debuts this month is inspired by a collective of over 200 interviews Laterras has done on his ‘Dear Future Wifey’ podcast. And the reader’s takeaway, says Laterras, is… “I want people to understand that though you’ve gone through heartbreak, it’s not the end of the story or the journey.
And it’s not the end of this interview either. Watch Laterras talk more about how being unfaithful in the past helps him help others in relationships, what he loves most about his new marriage, and his reason for writing his new book, ‘Student of Love.’ Check it out here.
