Vanessa Bell Calloway is the type of actress you can recall from solid guest appearances on TV’s well-known shows, like Grey’s Anatomy, her starring roles in dramas such as Saints & Sinners, and memorable characters in films like Coming to America and its three-decade-later sequel, Coming 2 America. And What’s Love Got To Do With It, which, by now, you’ve heard about Vanessa’s viral story, the one where she says the slap by Lawrence Fishburne, who played Ike Turner, to her character, Jackie, was the real deal (though by accident), the aftereffect definitely added to the raw emotion in that scene. With 150 film and television productions under her belt, including her current starring role in Netflix’s The Vince Staples Show as Anita Brown, Vanessa is “still that actress,” who can go from the small to the big screen and on Broadway effortlessly. She also recently starred in the Sony Pictures film, One of Them Days as Mama Ruth with Keke Palmer and SZA.
Here, we speak with Vanessa about Season 2 of her Netflix show and her career in this delightful interview.
