Tyra Banks Admits to Being in Emotionally Abusive Relationship

Supermodel and actress Tyra Banks opened up on TV One’s “Uncensored” Sunday, October 13th. The television personality shared the story of dealing with an abusive relationship.

Banks admits she didn’t always agree with other women’s choices who chose to stay with a significant other who was abusive.

“I remember being kind of judgmental for women that were in bad relationships. And I’m just like, ‘Get out. Come on, like what are you doing? Leave him! I don’t get it.’ Until I experienced it myself,” she says during the episode.

Bank’s never mentioned the person with whom she was in an abusive relationship stating it was emotional and never physical.

“I was in a relationship for many years, and we probably broke up 14-15 times. There were things that he said and made me feel like, I couldn’t leave, or if I left I had to go back.”

Today, the supermodel shares a three-year-old son York Banks Asla with her recent ex Erik Asla. Tyra also mentioned in the interview that she never understood the challenges faced when dealing with an abusive relationship until she found herself in one. She also said the ex that abused her emotionally did what he did because he knew he could and that she would always come back.

“He told me that this is what he does. That he knows how to break a woman down. And it took so many different friends and family for me to finally say goodbye to him,” she reveals.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Some women or men may be in abusive relationships who never find the courage to leave because they are so used to the specific person and so they find themselves dealing with something they don’t have to deal with, and it can consume them. If you are in an abusive relationship, please reach out to a trusted person or professional.
