Terri Vaughn: 'My Purpose Is To Keep Showing Up For Us!'

This week, we watched Terri Vaughn’s emotional interview with Carlos King on his show Reality With The King. And we can literally nod our heads in agreement with some of the conversation between the two because we’ve experienced similar situations as journalists, and though we’re not actresses, Terri’s journey has parts we can relate to.

My Purpose Is To Keep Showing Up For Us

Much like Terri, who was born and raised in San Francisco, we grew up in the Bay Area. Oakland, to be exact. And we’ve had the opportunity to interview her a time or two through our media. She may or may not remember. Nonetheless, knowing that three black women from the same area have the chance to connect through their respective careers is enough to be proud. But back to her interview with Carlos King, where he asks Terri —and we paraphrase —what makes her get emotional?

“It’s exhausting. It is exhausting to keep it going, Terri says through tears. The ‘Miss Governor’ show creator and actress talks about the difficulty that black women in the industry still have to deal with in terms of representation and opportunities, even when it’s apparent the talent is there. Dabbing her eyes with a tissue, she continues.

“And it is not easy. People may think it’s easy. And social media is an open door for people to be so cruel. They have no idea the stuff that goes on behind the scenes and how much we have to fight and how much we have to deal with. And we keep showing up and yeah, we show up and we’re made and we’re smiling because it’s our job. But that does not mean that it’s easy because it’s not. It’s not. But this is our purpose. This is our gift to the world. And it doesn’t matter to me. It doesn’t matter that the fight is hard, that people are closing doors, that people are belittling. None of that matters to me. At least it doesn’t matter more than what I know my purpose is. And my purpose is to keep showing up for us. My purpose is to put joy in the world.”

Terri expressed why it’s necessary to show up for others, like Carlos King.

“I love it if everybody else gets it, but I’m showing up for us. So we can laugh. So we can have some joy. So we can have some light in the midst of all the drama, all the fights that we’re all fighting because all of us are fighting some kind of fight. If you’re black, you’re fighting a fight. So, I’m on a mission and I have a purpose to give you some joy while you’re fighting. That’s what I want to do. And that’s why I don’t stop. It brings me joy to do that. Even in the midst of it all, I still get happy to be able to show up for you guys. I was excited about this interview to talk to you. Black man own show. I want to show up for you.”

“But it’s people like you and I who are like, “No, we know what it’s like to feel marginalized. We know what it’s like to feel ignored”…responds Carlos. To which Terri says later in the conversation, “We have to believe past what we believe,” and she has Miss Governor to show for you, because Terri, as she says to Carlos, pitched having her own show for 20 years and during that time when it didn’t look like it would happen, she knew and believed that one day it would.
