Gabrielle Union will host a live table read of an episode from the popular 90’s sitcom Friends. With an all-black cast on Tuesday night, including This is Us actor Sterling K. Brown, Uzo Aduba, Ryan Bathe, Aisha Hinds, Kendrick Sampson, and Jeremy Pope who will play the six friends.
Union was a guest star in one episode of Friends in season 7. However, the series received some criticism for its lack of diversity, which made way for Aisha Tyler’s character (Charlie Wheeler) in the last two seasons.
The group will reenact the episode “The One Where No One’s Ready” from season 3. With Brown as Ross Geller, Bathe (Brown’s wife in real-life) as Rachel Green, Aduba as Phoebe Buffay, Hinds as Monica Geller, Sampson as Joey Tribbiani, and Pope as the always funnyman Chandler Bing. The virtual event will be a part of the Zoom Where It Happens series and sphere headed by Black-ish star Tracee Ellis Ross and company. Ellis also reenacted an episode of the beloved 80’s sitcom Golden Girls on September 8., alongside actress Sanaa Lathan, Regina King, and Alfred Woodard.
On September 22, 1994, the Friends series debuted and ran for ten seasons with the final episode airing on May 6, 2004. The roles were played by Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, David Schwimmer, and Matthew Perry.
The virtual episode will be directed by Salli Richardson-Whitfield, including the production team with Ava DuVernay, Issa Rae, to name a few. It airs September 22, 6:00 to 7:00 PM ET.
