Filmmaker Ryan Coogler and actor Michael B. Jordan have established a successful filmmaking partnership. Their collaboration has proven prosperous for several reasons dating back to Coogler’s 2013 film “Fruitvale Station,” which depicts the wrongful killing of 22-year-old Oscar Grant, who was shot by BART Police in the early hours of New Year’s Day in 2009 in Oakland, California. This incident sparked protests, marches, and riots in downtown Oakland. Coogler mentioned in an earlier interview during his career that “I had a few things I needed from the actor. Once I went down that list, Michael B. Jordan was the guy who fulfilled all of them. You know, somebody who was relatively young, who looked like Oscar, who’s experienced, could pull off a multilayered performance that was needed, who was charismatic, but, also could be tough and threatening you know, all these things have to be believable. Sometimes, in certain scenes, you have to go through those things, and within seconds of each other, you know, and this relationship with the audience had to work or else the film fails, you know, and Mike was the guy for me.”
Coogler and Jordan went on to work on other films directed by the Oakland native, including the 2018 iconic “Black Panther,” a movie based on the Marvel character of the same name. Where the film grossed over a billion dollars and inspired the saying “Wakanda Forever.” The movie starred the late Chadwick Boseman as T’Challa. Jordan portrayed the character Erik Killmonger, who is T’Challa’s nemesis. Coogler and Jordan teamed up again for the 2025 horror film “Sinners,” based in the 1930s in the Mississippi Delta, written, co-produced, and directed by the groundbreaking filmmaker. The film was released in theaters on April 18 and stars Jordan as the lead, who plays both twins in the movie. The film has continued to break box office records, engaging ownership discussions inside and outside Hollywood about the future of an industry that often does not embrace that of black producers, directors, and actors.
Coogler and Jordan have showcased a successful partnership in the film industry. Both are young and driven, pursuing roles and types of films that captivate audiences. They have shown a strong working relationship, almost like a brotherhood, and their box office performance has been impressive. There are discussions about the development of Black Panther 3, which may star veteran actor Denzel Washington. We must wait and see if Coogler and Jordan will collaborate again on this Marvel film. In the meantime, “We are enjoying their teamwork and what these partnerships mean for the future of Hollywood.”
