The new biopic about Lucille Ball, “Being the Ricardos“, stars Nicole Kidman as the iconic Lucille Ball, and Lucie Arnaz says Kidman did a “spectacular job” of playing her mother.
Arnaz said that what Kidman did was “astounding” and added that “she’s got such poise and class.”
“The two days that I watched, though, were both little flashbacks — so she was playing Lucy in the late ’30s and mid-’40s. She wasn’t Lucy of Lucy Ricardo fame yet, so it was a trifle different,” said Lucie.
She went onto talk about the casting and said that many of the actors were cast for their talent rather than for being look-alikes of their characters.
“Nobody was cast because they look exactly like somebody. They were cast because they’re spectacular performers, actors, and they can capture the basic essence of what has been written in this script,” she said.
She added that director and screenwriter Aaron Sorkin was “adamant about that” and she is “looking forward to seeing the finished product.”
Details about the film have not been released yet, but Lucie revealed that the film mostly takes course over one week during the production of the iconic “I Love Lucy.”
“It takes place, primarily, during rehearsals for one of the shows,” she revealed. “There are two or three short flashback scenes to her life before I Love Lucy, when she worked on the radio show, when she was trying to convince the network to hire dad,” she added.
Although the film mostly depicts real events, Lucie said that Sorkin did take “some theatrical license” for some of the scenes.
“You do learn a lot about what it was like back then. His dialogue is always incredible. And I think he treated my mother and my father really well. I think they are accurate composites of these people,” Lucie said about Sorkin’s portrayal of her parents.
“The people that he has cast are just really great performers,” she added.
