Jasmine Guy Opens Up About Life Struggles and New Show 'Harlem'

Jasmine Guy made a recent appearance on the Tamron Hall Show and opened up about the struggles she faced during her divorce, a topic she often kept to herself.

Hall mentioned Guy’s newest show, “Harlem,” where she plays Patricia, a mother trying to push her daughter to do things and live her life properly.

The women in the show reminded Guy of her 22-year-old daughter Imani who also lives in Harlem.

Guy went on to say she was happy for the experiences her daughter is creating, much like her when she spent seven years in her 157th street apartment in New York.

“I love the experience she’s having in New York. It’s similar to mine,” said Guy.

Hall went on to share her admiration for the privacy Guy has maintained throughout her life, all with the exception of her very public divorce.
“I was always curious why you wanted to be that vulnerable; you needed to share that part,” said Hall.

Guy admitted that she was forced to share that part of her life and faced many financial struggles during that time.

“You learn the meaning of life is not the money, but money provides security. I didn’t want money to go shopping. I wanted me and my kid to be okay,” said Guy.

Guy became emotional and shared that the love surrounding her got her through.

“I have a lot of love in my life. I have a lot of support,” she said. “The love in my life is very strong.”

She admitted that it was difficult to look back on it now that she’s doing well in life but thinks it’s important to be open about it because many people face divorce, family break-ups, and financial struggles.

Guy also opened up about her friendship with Tupac Shakur and his mother Afeni Shakur, whose memoir she wrote.

She said Afeni told her, “I want to tell people my truth because there are a lot of people like me, and they need to know that you can get over it, you can get through this.”

While writing the book, she said that she tried to back off from many things, but Afeni pushed her to include them.

Now streaming on Amazon Prime Video, fans can watch Guy play Patricia on “Harlem.”
