It has been one year since the sudden and tragic loss of Kobe Bryant, his daughter Gianna (Gigi), and seven others’ lives. It was a day that seemed as if time stood still and the world stopped, as people of all ages and walks of life expressed their sorrow as the news of their passing poured in.
A year later, many are still weeping. Bryant was not only a famed basketball legend, but he also made a difference in the lives of people across the globe through his philanthropic ventures and kind spirit. One of his most notable contributions to his community and the world alike was the Mamba Sports Foundation, which is now renamed The Mamba and Mambacita Foundation, in honor of the late legend and 13-year-old daughter. Its mission is “dedicated to creating positive impact for underserved athletes and young women in sports.”
Leading up to the first anniversary of their passing, Vanessa Bryant, wife and mother to Kobe and Gigi Bryant, has been sharing her joyous and fondest memories of her family through social media. Even in her happy memories, Grief seems to be still waiting on the sidelines. She took to Instagram and said, “Grief is a messed up cluster of emotions. One day you’re in the moment laughing and the next day you don’t feel like being alive.”

Members of the NBA are also expressing their thoughts about the anniversary with heartfelt tributes across social media, including former and current players for the Los Angeles Lakers, Shaquille O’Neal, Lebron James, and Anthony Davis.
Grief is not linear. The road to recovery is long, but with the support of each other, and pulling from the strength and love that Kobe and Gianna left behind, the world will continue to walk the road, step by step. Mamba forever.
