Jermelle Simon stars in The Upshaws as Bernard Jr, a new comedy series now streaming on Netflix. The actor talks about his journey from retail as a Footlocker manager to getting lost in Denzel Washington’s home. He then jokes about a funny time between him, a fellow co-star, and what he thinks of working with comedian and actors Mike Epps and Wanda Sykes.
Simon says he auditioned for the role like any other. “Hollywood, you hear so many no’s, and you know, very rarely hear, you know, yes,” but he adds after a call back that he “nailed it.”
Did he get any work done working on set with Epps and Sykes? “You know. So it wasn’t really like work? I mean, we laughed the entire time. The writers were amazing. And then, of course, Mike and Wanda added their own spin to it with their delivery. It was hard working with comedians, but it brightened my day. I knew when I went to work I was gonna laugh.”
Veteran actress Kim Fields, what was that like working with her as well?
First of all, I love Kim fields, but in the beginning, Kim almost got me fired [Laughs].
