Social media is buzzing about the ‘A Different World’ sequel, which debuted September 24 on Netflix. Fans are enjoying seeing the original cast—Jasmine Guy, Kadeem Hardison, Darryl Bell, Cree Summer, Jada Pinkett Smith, Dawnn Lewis, Glynn Turman, Karen Malina White, Ajai Sanders, and Charnele Brown—all return to Hillman to reprise their roles from the original “The Cosby Show” spinoff series (1987–1993).
Jasmine Guy (Whitley Gilbert) in the original and sequel has drawn attention since the ADW sequel debuted, with many people comparing her current appearance to her younger self. The chatter saying, “She’s not aging well,” has caused Guy to take to her Instagram to share the following message.
“The internet can be brutal to women as we grow older. It asks us to celebrate life while criticizing every sign that we’ve lived it.”
Guy adds, “Growing older brings change, and I won’t pretend every change is easy. But beauty, style, and joy don’t have an expiration date. Let’s spend less time judging ourselves and each other, and more time loving each other, making memories, and living the life we’re here to live ❤️”
So why the emphasis on Guy’s appearance? It’s a sensitive conversation for many women in Hollywood and in everyday life. Are women like Guy and others not allowed to age gracefully without being heavily criticized for no longer looking like their younger selves? Join the conversation @bsm_mag.
