Popular radio host and comedian Rickey Smiley said Monday via his nationally syndicated radio show that his daughter was hospitalized after being shot in Houston while on her way to Whataburger to get something to eat.
“My youngest daughter was shot last night,” said Smiley, host of “The Rickey Smiley Morning Show. “I’m just so angry right now.”
Smiley, who is known for his comedic demeanor, was visibly shaken as he took to Facebook live to speak to his millions of followers to express his feelings on his daughter, who was hit by at least one stray bullet while waiting for the light to change.
“The reason why I’m on Facebook live is because I just want you to see that it is raw and that it is real. I want you to see what parents have to deal with when their children become victims of gun violence the raw feeling this s*** you have to go through. I’m grateful this morning I’m real grateful don’t get it twisted I’m grateful I’m more than grateful that my daughter is alive.”
Before the news of his daughter, Smiley also posted a video on Instagram about an 8-year old boy shot in Birmingham, AL, over the fourth of July weekend, along with two more shootings in Atlanta, GA.
Smiley said that his daughter, Aaryn, was “going to be fine.” He said he was headed to Houston to be with her.
Police had said three men and a woman were injured when someone opened fire in a Houston intersection Sunday night. Police said none of the injuries were life-threatening. Police say the suspected gunman fled.
We are sending our thoughts and prayers to the Smiley family. And the family’s of the five children that were killed this past weekend due to gun violence.
