A year after the announcement of a “Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” reboot, Will Smith finally revealed who will take on the role of Will.
The role goes to Philidelphia native Jabari Banks.
In the show, the character Will is “born and raised” in West Philidelphia, so having an actual West Philidelphia native play the role seems fitting.
The announcement was made after Will Smith made a video call to Banks, letting him know he got the role.
“It is an absolute pleasure to meet you, to be on with you, and from the deepest parts of my heart, I want to say congratulations to you,” Smith told Banks.
“You have the role of Will on Bel-Air,” he announced.
“I’m ready, I’m so ready,” replied Banks excitedly, revealing his father encouraged him to audition for the part.
Banks said he grew up watching “Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” and that it had a big impact on his life.
The show will be Banks’ first television appearance.
The new “Bel-Air” reboot was inspired by a video made by Morgan Cooper in 2019, where he imaged the show as a modern-day drama.
Cooper will serve as director, producer, and writer on “Bel-Air” which will stream on Peacock and has already been approved for two seasons.
