Serena Williams’ appearance during the Super Bowl halftime show, where she showcased the c-walk dance to Kendrick Lamar’s “Not Like Us,” continues to generate buzz. ESPN analyst Stephen A. Smith shared his thoughts on the performance but was quickly interrupted by his co-hosts on First Take.
“If I’m your husband, I’m thinking, ‘Why are you up there trolling him—trolling your ex?’” Stephen posited during a Feb. 10 episode of the First Take podcast. “If I’m married, and my wife is going to troll her ex—go back to his ass. Because clearly you don’t belong with me. What you worried about him for—and you with me?”

Fans who are familiar with Williams’ know that she performed the same dance during the Wimbledon grass celebration at the 2012 Olympics, where she celebrated her victory by c-walking on the court. Although she was first linked to Canadian rapper Drake in 2011, some may assume that her cameo at the Super Bowl Halftime Show was more about her and Kendrick Lamar’s roots in Compton, California, than her past relationship. Regardless, Williams’s appearance was a highly viewed and celebrated highlight of the show. In light of Stephen A. Smith’s comment, it’s heartening to see Williams’ husband, Alexis Ohanian, show support for her Super Bowl cameo. Ultimately, it’s all about unity.
What are your thoughts on Williams’ cameo during the Super Bowl halftime show? How do you celebrate a career win?
