Vanessa Bryant became emotional as she took the stage to receive the Giving Tree Award at the Baby2Baby 10th Annual Gala at the Pacific Design Center in West Hollywood, where Bryant and her daughters attended Saturday. The honor is given to a mother in the public eye who advocates for children in need. The award was introduced by one of Bryant’s close friends Ciara who kept her appearance a surprise.
The LA-based charity provides items such as diapers and wipes to children in need all over the U.S.
Bryant has long supported the organization and attended the event last in 2019, a few months before a helicopter crash would claim the lives of her husband Kobe Bryant, daughter Gianna and the seven others on board January 26, 2020.
Bryant received a standing ovation from everyone when she accepted the award.
“I have to start by saying how much I miss my perfect date tonight,” she said. “My husband Kobe loved attending Baby2Baby galas because he wasn’t “obligated to do anything.” With his big smile, he would look at me and say, ‘Babe, this is freaking awesome. Tonight I’m your plus one, baby!'”
“I get to be your date, help families and enjoy great food!” she recalled her husband telling her.
“As a mom of four beautiful girls, she’s the ultimate role model, and they are her driving force … V, I am so proud of you. You deserve this honor. Not only because of who you are, but how you love, how you serve, and how you care for others,” said Ciara as she presented Bryant with the award.
Bryant had this to say in an Instagram post to Baby2Baby to show her thanks.
I LOVE YOU. ? @baby2baby
