My Girlfriends! Who could forget the show’s theme song, celebrating four women characters —Joan, Toni, Maya, and Lynn —all different in personality and career, but united in sisterhood when the UPN show debuted on September 11, 2000? And the four of them are back on camera again. Sorry, not for a reboot, though we’re still holding out for that one, but Tracee Ellis Ross reunited she and her castmates in the first-ever Pattern Beauty commercial that debuted on Monday. Ellis Ross is Founder/CEO/Executive Producer/chief CURLtender of the brand.
“It’s girls’ night out & @therealgolden47, @itsmejillmarie & @misspersiawhite hit the hottest “lounge” in town. @traceellisross is serving up styling cocktails & curl care as chief CURLtender.”

The new commercial is clever marketing for several reasons including the upcoming 25th anniversary of Girlfriends and a play on how each of the ladies fell back into their characters (no pun intended for Maya’s part in the commercial) with scene takeaways like Joan always trying to come to the rescue, Maya’s snappy and witty dramatics, Toni’s over-the-top banter, and Lynn’s need to take things that don’t belong to her. Cue the laugh track.
The beauty brand’s strategy to bridge an iconic show like Girlfriends, which fans still love to this day, and tie it to a hair commercial featuring women characters we’ve loved is genius.
“The vibes are high & the hair is hydrated until… Ooop! Don’t worry. We got you. your texture. your style. by PATTERN #PatternBeauty #PatternCocktail #OkayPattern”
Love the commercial. Happy to see a Girlfriends reunion. Join the conversation @bsm_mag.
