Oprah Winfrey and Whoopi Goldberg delivered a heartfelt tribute to Quincy Jones at the Oscars. The iconic duo featured Goldberg in a Cinderella-like ballgown designed by Christian Siriano, while Winfrey wore a sparkly black and white gown by Dolce & Gabbana with a tuxedo jacket on top, a white shirt, and a built-in tie. They expressed their admiration for the legendary composer and producer, who passed away on November 3, 2024. During their tribute, they highlighted his groundbreaking contributions to music and film throughout his remarkable career.
Winfrey started the tribute introduction by saying, “When one hears the name Quincy Jones, one’s first thought is a musical genius, and for good reason, twenty-eight Grammy awards, arranger and conductor for legends like Frank Sinatra, Ella Jane Fitzgerald, and Ray Charles and the driving force behind “”We Are The World” but the man our beloved Q had an equally powerful impact on the world of film as a composer and producer.”
Goldberg said, “When we talk about black excellence, we’re talking about Quincy. Ok, yeah, you can give it up (to the audience thunderous applause). In 1967, Quincy Jones was the first black composer nominated in the original song category for “The Eyes of Love” in the film Banning 1967 was the first time. Just keep that in mind. Quincy was also nominated that year for the original music score for “In Cold Blood.” He received seven Oscar nominations for The Wiz, In Cold Blood, For Love of Ivy. and The Color Purple, which me and O (Oprah Winfrey) were part of.
Winfrey continued, “Paying tribute to him for all that he has meant to our movie community is why we all honor Q’s memory tonight. Quincy was love lived out loud in human form, and he poured that love into others and into his work. My life changed forever, and for the better; after meeting him, he actually discovered me for The Color Purple, which was my first film.
Goldberg added, “Me too, and tonight we honor true American legend whose music and movies continue to inspire us all. ”
