Mary J. Blige made a recent appearance on the Tamron Hall show, where she opened up about her past and what plans she has in store for her future albums.
The last time Hall and Mary J. Blige had seen each other was in 2017, a time where Hall remembers Blige saying was a “reset moment” for her.
“I just was trying to get through my life and get through those trials,” said Blige about 2017.
During that time, Blige was going through a divorce and many other personal struggles, but she was able to move past it all.
“I just kept moving and and I didn’t get bitter,” she said. “I was upset, yeah you know, I just let God take the wheel and do his thing, because if i had done anything would have been a disaster.”
Despite being known as the “queen of hip-hop” Blige still carries herself in a very humble and shy mannor.
“When you walked out I couldn’t help but think you know you have this crown of the queen of hip-hop soul and yet you walk out still so shy,” said Hall.
“I don’t know how to be cocky and I don’t know how to be arrogant, I just know how to be sure. I’m sure of who I am,” said Blige.
One of Blige’s accomplishments includes being inducted into the Apollo Theater Walk of Fame, something she never even expected to live to accomplish.
“When I was growing up I didn’t expect to even make it this far in my life, I thought I’d be dead in 1994,” she said. “During the ‘My Life’ album, you’ve seen the documentary you saw how I felt about my life myself.”
Blige let Hall know that one of the driving forces that helped her move forward was her many fans and her overall love of people.
“What helped me to move forward and progress is when the four million fans bought the album I said, ‘Well if I check out then I’m gonna take probably some of those people with me,’ and I always had a thing for people where I love people more than I love myself. That was always how i felt,” she said.
In her recent documentary, fans can see the struggles Blige went through while making her “My Life” album. She said that time of her life was full of moments that were “dark,” but she is glad she can look back now and feel some joy.
“Now when I listen to it, I have tears of joy because I’ve lived through that I made it, my fans and I lived through it,” she said.
Now that she’s been able to move past her previous struggles, Blige continues to make music and even told Hall and her audience that her next album is “going to blow everybody’s mind.”
