The reason— that I feel it is important to share personal moments in my music is to inform the listener that they aren’t alone and to remind them that some of us care and are empathetic to other people.
Hello Aries! Since 2007, you have been creating— a blend of soulful pop and R&B music. Your father encouraged you to pursue music after hearing you sing on a voicemail. You discovered your voice when you were only five years old, singing in your mother’s choir and later in the singing group J2. How has your journey prepared you for your current project?
My household growing up was full of music, ranging from Gospel to R&B to Funk. My parents had excellent taste in music, which influenced what I listened to and helped shape my voice. The type of music I listened to and sang at a young age has led me to create music that the listener can feel. I was inspired by artists who sang timeless music with passion and soul, and that is what I strive to do with my music.
Your song, “Motivation,” has a 90s R&B vibe. Was that intentional?
Honestly, no. I always try to sound contemporary, but listeners tell me that my sound is nostalgic and reminiscent of the 90s. Although I was nervous about if it would sound— “outdated,” the song has been well-received, and many people miss the feel and soul of 90s music.
Your lyrics have been described as deeply personal, drawing on your experiences as a father, a Christian, and a military Army Vet. Thank you for your service. Why is it important for you to share personal moments in your music?
I feel that it is vital to share personal moments in my music to remind listeners that they are not alone and that there are people who care and empathize with them. My life consists of selfless service as a vet, music artist, parent, and believer in Christ. I have a passion for helping others through my music, so it is crucial for me to express empathy.
Who would you like to work with musically and why?
There are many artists that I would love to collaborate with, including Jazmine Sullivan, Luke James, Ed Sheeran, Fantasia, H.E.R, Lalah Hathaway, Shawn Mendes, and more. I adore these artists because of their passion for delivering songs and their incredible vocal abilities. I know we could create magic together if presented with the opportunity.
What’s next for Aries Marquis? Are there any upcoming projects you can share with us?
I am currently brainstorming a new single to produce for the fall— and I am also considering releasing an EP next year. I have a performance scheduled for Sept 30th-Oct 1st in Atlanta during the Hip-Hop Awards Weekend for the radio show “2HotRadio.” I am staying active, and more music is on the way!
“Motivation” is available on all music streaming platforms.
