The Color Purple Houston Advanced Screening 12-4-2023

The BSM team had the opportunity to attend the advance screening of the highly anticipated movie musical THE COLOR PURPLE  on Monday, December 4th, at the Houston Marq*E Stadium 23 ahead of the Christmas debut on Dec. 25.

Directed by Samuel Bazawule, known professionally as Blitz the Ambassador, The film is a beautifully reimagined version of the beloved 1985 classic with Whoopi Goldberg, Danny Glover, and Oprah Winfrey based on the novel by Alice Walker. This film adaptation from the award-winning Broadway musical provides the perfect blend of storytelling about the main character Celie, played by Fantasia Barrino, who, throughout the years of hardship, finds her strength in God to triumph and reclaim what once seemed lost in her family, especially her reconnection with sister Nettie whose bond between the two remained strong even when separated by continents. It is a show of the sisterhood of women there to eventually steer Celie away from decades of being under the thumb of Mister, the abusive spouse.

The cinematography and choreography were entertaining, with soul-stirring singing throughout. A stand-out star in the film is Danielle Brooks (Orange Is the New Black) for her portrayal of Sofia (Oprah Winfrey played the role of Sofia three decades ago) in the original film. Brooks was comedically funny and dramatically convincing on the big screen. The entire cast was outstanding!

A must-see film!

Debuting at No. 1 on Christmas Day, the all-new “The Color Purple” also stars Taraji P. Henson as Shug Avery. Halle Bailey and Ciara play the young and adult Celie, and other powerhouse performers include Colman Domingo (young Mister), Louis Gossett Jr. (Mister’s dad), Corey Hawkins (Harpo), Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor (as Mama of Celie and Nettie), H.E.R., Tamela Mann, Jon Batiste and more.

Distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures in theaters now!
