Whoopi Goldberg Shares Emotional Tribute to Nichelle Nichols on ‘The View’

Whoopi Goldberg shared an emotional tribute to Nichelle Nichols Monday on ‘The View ‘ daytime talk show.

“A trailblazer, a heroine, and an extraordinary woman—someone who inspired millions and millions of people but inspired me,” Goldberg said of Nichols on Monday. “Nichelle was the first Black person I’d ever seen who made it to the future.”

Nichols, best known for her role as Lieutenant Uhura on ‘Star Trek,’ died on Saturday in Silver City, N.M. The cause of death was reported as heart failure. She was 89. The series aired from 1966 to 1969 and starred William Shatner as Captain Kirk, Leonard Nimoy, Mr. Spock, and DeForest Kelley as Dr. McCoy, a.k.a. Bones.

Nichols, a pioneer in her own right, inspired women (in particular black women) as one of the first Black women to have a leading role in a TV series. In the latter years, Nichols worked with NASA to assemble minorities for the space program.

The hosts of The View also remembered Pat Carroll, Heather Gray, and Bill Russell in the tribute.

Condolences to the Nichols family, friends, and fans. She will be missed.
