October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Mathew Knowles sat down on Good Morning America Wednesday to reveal his breast cancer diagnosis. In an exclusive interview, Knowles,67, spoke to GMA host Michael Strahan to explain the type of breast cancer he is fighting. The father of musicians Beyoncé and Solange Knowles says he is a survivor.
The music executive discovered he had cancer when bloodstains kept appearing on his shirt, and how his wife noticed blood on the sheets. For Knowles, historic genetic testing showed he was predisposed to getting male breast cancer.
“The rest of my life I have to be very much aware and conscious and do all of the early detection.”
Throughout Knowles’s treatment, his family has been very supportive. He has the BRCA2 gene mutation, which places him in a high-risk category, including such cancers as prostate, pancreatic, and melanoma.
“It’s also means that my kids have a higher chance, a higher risk. Even my grandkids have a higher risk. And they handled it like they should. They went and got the test.”
We wish Mathew Knowles the best of health.
