Tia Mowry-Hardrict, 42, shared a painful experience from her past that “still affects” her today.
During an episode of Entertainment Tonight’s video series, Unfiltered, Tia recalled a moment when she and her twin sister Tamera Mowry-Housley wanted to be on a popular teenage magazine but were denied. The reason, their race. The Mowry sisters come from a beautiful bi-racial family.
“My sister and I wanted to be on the cover of this very popular magazine. We were told that we couldn’t be on the cover of the magazine because we were black and we would not sell. Wiping away tears the actress went on to say: How someone can demean your value because of the color of your skin. I will never forget that.”
The Family Reunion star also shared “I wish I would have said something then, I wish I would have had the courage to speak out and say that isn’t right.” Today Tia is using her voice to instill self-confidence in her children, son Cree, nine, and daughter Cairo, two she shares with husband, Cory Hardrict.
“To this day, I’m always telling my beautiful brown-skinned girl that she is beautiful. And the same thing even with my son. I tell him how handsome he is, I tell him, you know, he is smart. Because I know what it feels like for someone to devalue your worth, and I don’t want my children to ever, ever, ever, feel that. And not have the strength, or the foundation, to not believe it. To believe that they are worthy.”
Tia experience this at the height of her career as the star of Sister, Sister, the popular sitcom, originally aired from 1994 to 1999 starring herself and Tamera as twins sisters separated at birth and raised by their adoptive parents who moved in together as a blended family.
In July, Netflix announced that it had acquired the show and as of September 1, all six seasons can now be seen on the in demand streaming platform.
The working mom and entrepreneur is also the author of the cookbook Whole New You: How Real Food Transforms Your Life, for a Healthier, More Gorgeous You and the co-founder of the supplement line Anser.
