Though not a comedian, Keith Lee could have turned the awkward moment at the 2024 BET Awards with host Taraji P. Henson into something comical for his audience after Henson confused influencer Jordan Howlett with food critic Keith Lee at the show. Days later, headlines reported that Lee tossed the rose Henson had given him to the floor in a since-deleted TikTok video that he captioned. “Our name will be known in every room it’s supposed to be, when it’s supposed to be, how it’s supposed, with no confusion. God is amazing.” The food critic later explained, “I am not upset with Taraji P. Henson by any stretch of imagination.” He added that he thought “she smoked it” at the awards. “I don’t think for one second that Taraji had any ill-will or any ill-intentions behind the situation.”
Henson responded to Lee’s post-show initial reaction: “Life really is too short for this behavior.”
What if…
In one of his upcoming food critic videos, Lee poked harmless fun at Henson. Why? It redirects the energy he may have felt if he was in his feelings. We’re human. It happens. Henson may have thought it would be funnier for Lee to take that approach rather than fueling media to drum up new beef with the latest round of celebrities.
There, Lee could have started the video with an image of Howlett before getting on camera with his followers with something like. “Sorry, I pulled a Taraji.” And then continue to review his newest food critic meal. After all, Henson said Lee wasn’t in his seat when the mix-up happened, and Lee says he and his wife were moved to another seat a little before Henson stepped into the awards crowd to give people their flowers. And in all, it appeared to be an “oops” moment that anyone could have made.
