The 78th Writers Guild ceremony took place in New York City on March 8, 2026, recognizing the achievements of extraordinary writing in various categories. Some of the top film category winners were Sinners, which won for best original screenplay, and One Battle After Another, which won for best adapted screenplay, both honored for their outstanding writing. For the television category, shows like The Pitt, won for best drama series, best series, and best episodic drama, and other notable programs like The Studio, which won for best comedy, to name a few.
The East Coast ceremony was hosted by comedian Roy Wood Jr., who is famously known for his appearance on The Daily Show and his various standup specials. Woods’ politically charged monologue poked fun at hosting the awards ceremony for the third time, using political comedy to reference running for a third term.
“It’s a pleasure to be back for a third time. I know that a lot of people say that there should be something against doing something for a third term,” he joked. “Some people say that there shouldn’t be a rule against a third term. They say you should be able to serve as long as you want to serve. And I spoke with [WGA East] president, Tom Fontana, and he gave me his blessing.”
Amid the West Coast WGA staff union being on strike since February 17, 2026, due to alleged unfair labor practices and first contract negotiations by management, the Guild’s LA ceremony was canceled a week ago, with a possible Los Angeles ceremony for the same-named city nominees at a later date.
