Should Celebrities Do Away With Extravagant Social Media Posts in the Pandemic?

Kim Kardashian recently posted pics from her 40th soirée. Ordinarily, a birthday celebration is celebrated by people we know and even those who enjoy seeing what gets shared on social media, but such was not the case. The “Keeping Up With The Kardashians” star’s party on a private island didn’t sit too well with her millions of followers. They accused the media personality of flaunting her wealth when masses of people are out of work, sick, or losing their lives and with mental illness on the rise.

Kim wrote the following message in an Instagram post from her bash, where she is seen in a photo with siblings, Kourtney, Rob, Khloe, and Kendall. The matriarch of the family, Kris Jenner, was also in attendance.

“I realize that for most people, this is something that is so far out of reach right now, so in moments like these, I am humbly reminded of how privileged my life is.” #thisis40

The mother of four added, “After 2 weeks of multiple health screens and asking everyone to quarantine, I surprised my closest inner circle.”

40 and feeling so humbled and blessed. There is not a single day that I take for granted, especially during these times when we are all reminded of the things that truly matter. For my birthday this year, I couldn’t think of a better way to spend it than with some of the people who have helped shaped me into the woman I am today. Before COVID, I don’t think any of us truly appreciated what a simple luxury it was to be able to travel and be together with family and friends in a safe environment. After 2 weeks of multiple health screens and asking everyone to quarantine, I surprised my closest inner circle with a trip to a private island where we could pretend things were normal just for a brief moment in time. We danced, rode bikes, swam near whales, kayaked, watched a movie on the beach and so much more. I realize that for most people, this is something that is so far out of reach right now, so in moments like these, I am humbly reminded of how privileged my life is. #thisis40

And though the message may have been heartfelt many were not buying the business mogul’s reason for posting something private publicly when the pandemic has turned so many lives upside down.

Which asks the question, should celebrities not post their privileged lifestyles on social media for fear of backlash?
