Coco Jones paid tribute to the late Whitney Houston as she performed the black national anthem ‘Life Every Voice and Sing’ before kickoff at Super Bowl LX Sunday. Jones wore a nylon jacket and skirt by Karl Kani. The two-piece look down to the white headband, was a sporty throwback to Houston and the Le Coq Sportif tracksuit she wore during the 1991 Super Bowl. The singing legend, known as The Voice, to date, is the most “iconic rendition of “The Star-Spangled Banner“ ever sung by a single artist.
The crystal-covered red, black and green stripes on Jones’ cropped bomber represented the Pan African flag. The entire fashion patterned a “stylish corseted detail around her bodice with a high-waisted skirt that boasted a drawstring and elastic waistband in the style of a pair of vintage track pants, which nipped in the volume of her bubble-hem mini skirt. A white train fell around her legs, billowing down her frame and cascading into a puddle beneath the platform on which she stood.”
Jones’ choice of song was equally fitting. The hymn that dates back to the Civil Right Movement is particularly symbolic of Black History Month. A special touch was “the violinists who sat behind the singer during her performance were in a coordinated pants and zip-up version of the look that took viewers back in time.
The Grammy-nominated singer spoke to Entertainment Tonight before the big game, telling them that she was “so excited about [her] outfit” and that she “paid some homage to Whitney Houston.”
