After one season, Poppa’s House, starring Damon Wayans Sr. and Damon Wayans Jr., has been canceled on CBS. The real-life father-son duo teamed up to bring the funny in this family sitcom, reminiscent of the family humor of earlier sitcoms like The Cosby Show, Family Matters, Wayans Sr.’s early 2000s show My Wife and Kids. It also shares a similar vibe with the modern sitcom “The UpShaws.”
Throughout Hollywood history, we have seen only a few predominantly black sitcoms make it past the five-year mark, so why are shows like Poppas’ House being canceled, especially when there is a need for healthy family programs on television. Surely, this show had a chance of making it; it had all the ingredients for a show that could run for five seasons or more.

Wayans Sr. played the role of Poppa, a podcast host, alongside Essence Atkins’s character Ivy. Meanwhile, Wayans Jr. portrayed Damon, a husband and father to a son and daughter. Together, they depicted the dynamics of an everyday family living next door to each other, navigating typical family interactions infused with humor. Watching the father-and-son relationship on television was refreshing, especially since they had great chemistry, which reflects their real-life bond.

The show also featured several members of the Wayans family, including Kim Wayans, who directed episodes of the series, and Shawn Wayans, who contributed as a writer. Marlon Wayans recently appeared on the show, playing the role of Damon Wayans Sr.’s younger brother, which is quite ironic. The cast included Tetona Jackson as Nina, Caleb Johnson as Trey, River Blossom as Maya, Geoffrey Owens as J.J., and Wendy Raquel Robinson as Catherine.
Poppa’s House debuted on CBS in October 2024.
