Kim Porter was a beautiful model and actress who passed away a year ago today. The legacy she leaves behind remains strong in the hearts of those who knew her. She played the piano and could sing. It was something she posted to her followers at one time, but Diddy, her longtime on again and off again love, and the father of her children re-shared it last year in tribute to Kim days following her untimely death. When the two were not romantically linked, they were still connected as friends and co-parents. But nothing compared to the love and devotion she had for her kids; sons Quincy and Christian, and twin girls Jessie James, and D’Lila Star. Quincy, the eldest of the siblings, is the son of R&B singer Al B. Sure! Diddy adopted him at an early age while in a relationship with Porter.
Then some friends were more like sisters, who keep her memory alive. Take Eboni Elektra, who has redefined the art of capturing moments in time. It is through Elektra that many of us feel like we knew Kim personally. From the catalog of videos chronicling their dynamic chemistry to their travels and adventures, and Elektra’s heartfelt storytelling honoring Bonnie ( as she also called Kim) you can’t help but feel a sense of family as you watch these two women love and celebrate one another through Elektra’s undying love for her friend. But, perhaps, it is Elektra’s strong loyalty that resonates most. In an age where catty girl fights are a thing of the norm on the small screen, it is good to see that Elektra celebrated her friend’s wins while she was alive and also in death as part of Kim’s legacy of spreading love. Each time Elektra posts a memory of her dear friend, there appears lots of comments from her followers on how her sharing has helped them to “be present” in the lives of the people they love. What has been online therapy for Elektra has, in turn, helped many people value their relationships more.
Though no one human is without imperfections, some have lived a life with so much love that when they are no longer here, their presence is still felt; part of Kim’s legacy is the love she passed down to her children. The strength they have shown in the face of the unimaginable shows she poured so much into her offspring. Each of them honors her memory in their own ways. Quincy through his acting something he had in common with Porter, Christian with his music who his mom was a big fan, and Jessie and D’Lila in all their girly mannerisms that remind us of Kim each day. We are remembering a woman who lived her life, knowing her children were her top priority. Her family was important. We see it in how the older brothers look after their little sisters. It’s also seen in the love shown to their other brother and sister, Justin Combs and Chance.
We see it when Diddy shares his life with his family on social media, and how he has never been shy to say who guided him to become an even better and “present” father. It was not too long ago that Diddy shared Kim’s final words to him, “Puffy, take care of my babies!”
Your babies are thriving! Thank you for leaving a legacy of love in all who knew you and the many who have grown to know you more as ongoing tributes celebrate the life you lived. Rest well, beautiful spirit.
