Issa Rae and Kumail Nanjiani in Rom-Com "The Lovebirds"

The Lovebirds, directed by Michael Showalter, with Insecure’s Issa Rae and The Eternals Kumail Nanjiani, was originally set to premier at SXSW before hitting theaters on April 3rd through Paramount Pictures.

In light of the Coronavirus pandemic, this romantic comedy doubled as a murder mystery will no longer have a theater premier but will be available to all Netflix subscribers come May 22nd.

The Lovebirds couple, Nanjiani and Issa, have had a long night in New Orleans and are on the verge of a breakup.

The plot begins to thicken when a supposed officer of the law demands possession over the couple’s car in order to chase down a perpetrator. Instead, that officer runs the perpetrator over with the couple’s car multiple times, leading Issa and Kumail’s characters to believe that he may not had been an officer of the law after all.

The man who was portraying to be an officer flees the scene. Now, Kumail and Issa are on the run, trying to track down the actual murderers so that they don’t get framed for something they didn’t do.
